Spice Island Beach Resort Outlines Vision for Caribbean Hospitality’s Future at SOTIC 2024
September 4, 2024, Grand Cayman: Grenadian Luxury Boutique Hotel Owner, Janelle Hopkin shared her blueprint for setting Caribbean Hospitality on the path to delivering unforgettable experiences for the guest of the future.
Her comments were part of her feature address at the CTO’s State of The Industry Conference (SOTIC), which took place from 2-6 September 2024 at the Westin Grand Cayman on Seven Mile Beach in the Cayman Islands. Hopkin, who serves as President & Managing Director of the Spice Island Beach Resort in Grenada, was invited to speak from an operator’s perspective on navigating the evolving tourism landscape.
Drawing from the conference theme, “Caribbean Tourism: Fueling our Lifeblood,” Hopkin metaphorically compared the role of ‘blood’ in transporting oxygen, nutrients and waste to and from the cells in the human body to that of the guest experience in delivering all the elements of the perfect stay that is vital for maintaining life in our tourism ‘body’.
Similarly, she compared the role of the heart as the “pump or engine” that facilitates the delivery of said oxygen and nutrients to our staff. In this instance she posited that “people are the heart of hospitality,” denoting that people are the first pillar of her framework.
“Hospitality and tourism are fast-paced and if we intend to remain competitive, we must invest more in our people. Staff training and skills development is crucial for long-term success. By equipping team members with the necessary knowledge, tools and techniques and keeping them updated with industry trends and best practices they can boost productivity and consistently deliver high-quality, superior service that can enhance customer experience, improve customer satisfaction and drive business growth.” said Hopkin.
Referencing her own experiences as a hotelier, she outlined the 4-part model (authenticity, individualization, innovation, and excellence) that has worked successfully to establish her resort as one of the premier Caribbean all-inclusive properties has been to deliver stays that are effortlessly bespoke – unique, memorable, and highly distinctive, shaped by local culture.
In her speech, Hopkin also made the case for technology as the ‘fuel’ and second pillar of tourism’s future. She opined that operators must invest in technology and called on them to evolve their strategies and take advantage of the impact technological advances can make on their businesses.
Hopkin stated, “The flexibility of new technologies and architectures is enabling operators to rethink how they can harness technology to make it easier for their organizations to innovate and position themselves to provide new offerings and meet the needs of guests. Technology will also be key to better managing operations and maximizing overall performance, enhancing
sales and marketing approaches, increasing efficiency and reducing costs.”
She further explained that “to meet the demands of future travelers, and to truly engage and convert what I like to call the “now consumer”—a highly mobile, always-connected individualist – operators would need to embrace the technology these consumers use. Accordingly, Caribbean hoteliers will need to address mobility holistically to determine ways to effectively integrate both guest and employee demands into their enterprise and property IT architectures and manage them across the guest life cycle.”
As a 3 rd generation hotelier, and daughter of the late iconic Caribbean hotelier Sir Royston Hopkin, Ms. Hopkin brought a youthful energy to the conference and spoke with optimism for the future for the sector. She closed by stating that if tourism is indeed seen as the ‘lifeblood of the Caribbean’, then it is imperative that more young hoteliers like herself understand that hospitality is now part art, part science, to ensure the region remains poised to meet the needs of the ever-evolving, choice spoilt voyagers of the future.

communities hardest hit by the hurricane as they face the arduous task of re-building and
recovery.”

We must acknowledge our long-time Director of Sales and Marketing in the UK, Lynn Girling, who has been one of our most avid supporters over the years. Lynn has worked tirelessly to proudly fly the Spice flag in the UK, and on the travel and tourism circuit throughout Europe for more than two decades. She has been an invaluable resource for us, and we are rightfully sad to have to say a fond farewell as she moves into retirement at the end of March. She is powerhouse in the hospitality industry and has represented some of the top properties across the region and we are extremely proud to have had her support over the years. She will be sorely missed but we must acknowledge that she has undoubtedly earned the right to a well-deserved rest after such a long and industrious career. Spice Island Beach Resort Recognized For 7th Year With Six Star Diamond Award By American Academy Of Hospitality Sciences
GRAND ANSE BEACH, Grenada (Jan. 14, 2020) - Sir Royston Hopkin KCMG, chairman and managing director of Spice Island Beach Resort (https://www.spiceislandbeachresort.com/), received two prestigious honours at his recent 75th birthday celebration - the 2020 Six Star Diamond Award from the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences (AAHS) for the 7th consecutive year and a Six Star Diamond Award from the organization for Oliver's, a first-time recognition for the resort's fine dining restaurant. Joseph Cinque, chairman and CEO of AAHS, attended Sir Royston's party to personally deliver the awards honouring Spice Island Beach Resort's owners, management and staff members as Grenada's premier all-inclusive luxury resort.
"We are very proud to start the New Year with news that Spice Island Beach Resort has been honored once again with the AAHS Six Star Diamond Award for the resort as well as the first Six Star Diamond Award for Oliver's restaurant," said Sir Royston. "We constantly strive to achieve the excellence required in the luxury travel sector to earn these distinguished awards, which represent our dedication to providing the highest levels of customer satisfaction," he added.
"Earning the Six Star Diamond Award for Oliver's is a reflection of the gastronomic excellence we have developed along with Head Chef Jesson Church to provide a fine-dining experience that captures the local flavours, our family's personal recipes and international cuisine in an extensive table d'hote menu," said Sir Royston.
The Six Star Diamond Award is one of the most prestigious honors of true excellence in service, hospitality, gastronomy, attitude, quality and cleanliness. The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences specializes in reviewing hotels, resorts, spas, airlines, cruise lines, automobiles, products, restaurants and chefs, and is most notably known for its Six Star Diamond Award.
AAHS receives a large number of possible recipients for the award from respectable sources around the world. The selection is then refined by the Board of Trustees and the final evaluation is a visit by an anonymous inspector to review the destination and its services.
The presentation of the AAHS Six Star Diamond Award follows the announcement in November 2019 that the resort has received the highest honor from the prestigious AAA reviewers, the 2020 AAA Five Diamond Award, the fourth consecutive year the resort has been bestowed this honour.

“It is an honor to accept such an award and hope it will serve as an inspiration to fellow black owners as we strive for excellence in the hospitality industry,” said Sir Royston (pictured right) when accepting the award. “I was brought up by my mom and dad in a 12 room Inn. My mom was a pioneer in local cuisine and my dad dealt with operations. That was the beginning of my journey as to what hospitality meant. Now I lead by example to show the next generation of black entrepreneurs what they can achieve by holding on to their principles and refusing to sacrifice their vision.”
Spice Island Beach Resort is the only AAA Five Diamond Property out of 121 in the world and the only resort out of seven in the Caribbean region owned by a black Grenadian and his family. No other property within the AAA Five Diamond listing holds such a distinction. Sir Royston and the entire team at the multiple award-winning resort are tremendously proud of such an achievement having obtained such status since 2016.
Sir Royston has had an extensive and distinguished career in the hospitality and tourism industry spanning more than 54 years of contributions to his home country, Grenada, and the entire Caribbean region.
Sir Royston began his tourism career when he joined the family business at the Ross Point Inn in 1965. Then, at the age of 20, he was appointed to the Grenada Board of Tourism where he served for 18 consecutive years. He holds the distinction of being the first Grenadian to be elected president of the Grenada Hotel Association (an accomplishment at the age of 24), a position he held 14 times.
In 1969, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of Spice Island Inn, and in 1975, was appointed Deputy Chairman and Deputy Managing Director of the resort. He bought the Blue Horizon Hotel (now called Blue Horizons Garden Resort) along with his brothers Arnold and Gerald in 1978.
Sir Royston purchased a majority interest in Spice Island Inn in 1987 and became owner and chairman of the property, which he renamed Spice Island Beach Resort.
Under his skillful stewardship, the property expanded from 28 to 56 suites by 1990 and underwent a $6 million transformation in 2000, reopening with 66 elegant suites, a new spa, restaurant and bar. Also added were many enhanced services and amenities, further elevating the level of luxury at the property.
In 2004, Hurricane Ivan devastated the resort and Spice Island had to close its doors a second time. Undeterred, Sir Royston embarked on a US$12 million project to redesign and renovate the award-winning resort, which reopened on Dec. 15, 2005 at the highest level of Caribbean luxury and personalized service, with facilities on par with any major five-star resort in the world. The resort now employs 205 persons.
In 2013, the tourism industry icon invested in another multi-million dollar series of upgrades and enhancements to ensure the boutique resort remains at the forefront of the luxury tourism market.
At a regional level, Sir Royston has served on the Board of the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA), where he’s held numerous positions since 1970 including director, vice president, president and chairman. During his tenure with CHTA, Sir Royston founded the Small Hotels Committee, which today is still one of the most important sub-committees of the association. Sir Royston was also the youngest Director of CHTA ever elected.
Sir Royston was one of the first Grenadians to establish a Scholarship Fund for needy children when he adopted the Grand Anse R.C. School in 1992. He worked in collaboration with the Grenada Union of Teachers and the Ministry of Education to enlighten teachers about career opportunities within the Tourism Industry and created a lobby for tourism tobe included in the schools' curricula.
Sir Royston is the recipient of several prestigious awards including the coveted CHTA “Hotelier of the Year” honor, Lifetime Achievement Awards from CHTA and the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), the Star Diamond Award from the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences, the inaugural Minister’s Outstanding Achievement Award from Hon. Clarice Modeste-Curwen, Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2019 Caribbean Hotel & Resort Investment Summit and numerous other recognitions from the Grenada Hotel Association.
In December 2004, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II graciously conferred the title of Knight Commander of The Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG) for Sir Royston’s contribution to tourism in Grenada and throughout the Caribbean.
Today, Sir Royston is internationally known for his industry knowledge and savvy. He is the former Chairman of the Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism (CAST). He is also an Honorary Director of CHTA and the Grenada Hotel and Tourism Association, and Vice President of the Board of Trustees for the Queen Elizabeth Home for Children.

Spice Island Beach Resort Bestowed Six Star Diamond Award
SPICE ISLAND BEACH RESORT BESTOWED SIX STAR DIAMOND AWARD BY AMERICAN ACADEMY OF HOSPITALITY SCIENCES FOR 6th YEAR GRAND ANSE BEACH, Grenada (June 17, 2019) – No stranger to prestigious accolades, Grenada’s premier all-inclusive luxury resort, Spice Island Beach Resort (www.SpiceIslandBeachResort.com), has once again been bestowed the coveted Six Star Diamond Award by the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences (AAHS). The family-
owned and operated retreat received this prominent award on Friday,

“We’re honoured to be recognized for the past six years with the prestigious AAHS Six Star Diamond Award, a true benchmark for the luxury travel sector,” said Sir Royston Hopkin KCMG, chairman and managing director of Spice Island Beach Resort. “The distinguished award reflects our commitment to consistently provide guests with the utmost in customer service. AAHS receives a large number of possible recipients for the award from respectable sources around the world. The selection is then refined by the Board of Trustees and the final evaluation is a visit by an anonymous inspector to review the destination and its services.
In addition to receiving the Six Star Diamond award, the evening’s celebration was crowned with the presentation of a special recognition award to Sir Royston. Chairman and CEO of the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences, Joseph Cinque, honoured Sir Royston with the recognition “As the Most Respected Leader in the Caribbean Tourism Industry.” Sir Royston complimented the academy on its commitment to excellence and praised its overall integrity. Sir Royston Hopkin Receives Lifetime Achievement Award
SPICE ISLAND BEACH RESORT’S SIR ROYSTON HOPKIN RECEIVES LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD AT 2019 CARIBBEAN HOTEL & RESORT INVESTMENT SUMMIT MIAMI (May 28, 2019) – Sir Royston Hopkin KCMG, chairman of Grenada’s Spice Island Beach Resort (www.SpiceIslandBeachResort.com), has once again been recognized for his great accomplishments. The tourism industry icon received a Lifetime Achievement Award
at the 2019 Caribbean Hotel & Resort Investment Summit (CHRIS 2019) in the presence of over 450 delegates who had nothing but admiration for Sir Royston’s remarkable achievements.
“My life has been a life of service with honour and not for honour and I accept this award with utmost humility,” said Sir Royston, thanking the CHRIS officials for awarding him this signal honour at a luncheon attended by delegates from countries across the Caribbean as well as the United States, South America, United Kingdom and Europe.
Sir Royston seized the opportunity in his acceptance remarks to address two key areas he felt are pivotal to increasing investment in the Caribbean with a view to enhancing the sustainability of this “dear region of ours.” Referencing the Sea of Opportunities theme of the summit, Sir Royston pointed out that we would be unable to access those opportunities if we are not prepared to “think radical” and consider outside-of-the-box solutions.
Air Transportation throughout the region needs to be seriously addressed, Sir Royston noted, referring to the region’s current aviation challenges as a travesty. He said it is a “no go” for those who wish to invest in the region when they look at the state of regional transportation. In support of Grenada’s Prime Minister Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell, Sir Royston reiterated that airport taxes must be removed if the regional airline LIAT is to survive. He noted that Dr. Mitchell has been advocating this for the past six years and he himself has been a proponent of this move for the past twenty-five years. Sadly he said, it has all “fallen on deaf ears.”
Regional governments, Sir Royston pointed out, have held on to the taxes, claiming that there will be no revenue to maintain their airports if these taxes are removed. Removal of the taxes, Sir Royston opined, will increase traffic and generate more income for the islands overall, allowing them to fund their airport maintenance and development programmes. He indicated that there would be the need to seek bridge financing during the first three years of tax removal to allow for the exponential growth of traffic with significantly reduced fares.
Sir Royston also called for the harmonization of our Incentive Aids Ordinance throughout the region. He challenged the delegates to discuss and work towards developing a policy where member countries agree on a common range of incentives which would attract more investors.
“Over the last thirty-five years, the cruise business has grown substantially while hotels have been struggling in every island, barring none,” Sir Royston said, adding: “Why is the cruise business succeeding and why can’t we attract hotel investors except in a few select islands?”
“We need to develop a policy that determines our own destiny and enables the hotel sector to maximize its economic value to our region. We must continue to cooperate with the international lending agencies that have supported us over the years, but we cannot allow ourselves to be governed or restricted by their policies. Cruise tourism is a vital source of revenue for our economies, but they operate in a tax free environment. While I fully support the Citizenship by Investment Program, which generated significant investment in the region, our investment in our resorts and hotels must benefit from similar terms in order to remain competitive,” he argued.
Sir Royston urged Summit attendees to “lobby our governments with widely accepted solutions that embrace the ‘less is more’ concept. We must encourage them to strategically revisit taxation policies in order to attract more investment, especially in our room stock. This is the only way to reduce unemployment and achieve greater tourism spend in our respective countries, thus improving our collective economies,” he further stated.
The distinguished hotelier also had kind words for his wife Lady Betty Hopkin, his children Janelle, Nerissa and Ryan along with the rest of his family in attendance, brother and sister Arnold Hopkin and Penelope Rodgers and son-in law Neil Duncan.
Sir Royston has had an extensive and distinguished career in the hospitality and tourism industry spanning more than 54 years of contributions to his home country, Grenada, and the entire Caribbean region.

Sir Royston O. Hopkin Urges Hoteliers to Focus on Uniqueness, Service at Caribbean Hospitality Industry Exchange Forum
MIAMI, FL (June 6, 2017) - Sir Royston O. Hopkin KCMG, respected Caribbean hotelier and owner and chairman of the award-winning Spice Island Beach Resort in Grenada, addressed the importance of excellence in his keynote presentation at the 2017 Caribbean Hospitality Industry Exchange Forum (CHIEF), urging hoteliers to focus on their uniqueness and excel in service.
Introduced by Janelle Hopkin, Spice Island Beach Resort's Deputy Managing Director, Sir Royston addressed over 400 event attendees including government officials, hoteliers, hotel partners, vendors and other hospitality professionals at the opening event on June 2nd at the Hyatt Regency in Miami, Florida.
With an extensive and distinguished career in the hospitality and tourism industry spanning more than 52 years of contributions to his home country, Grenada and the entire Caribbean region, Sir Royston Hopkin drew upon his vast experience in the industry to highlight the "power and commitment to excellence" - the theme of his keynote address.
As a former president and chairman of CHTA, Sir Royston lauded the value of the organization: "I am here today, and have become who I am today, as a result of several factors including the positive influence CHTA has had on my career. CHTA has been for me, and can be for all of you, a university without walls."
Sir Royston provided credit to his parents, Curtis and Audrey Hopkin, who taught him from a young age how to have the power to excel. His parents ran the successful 12-room Ross Point Inn, which quickly earned a positive reputation throughout the Caribbean region, especially as the "place to eat." Sir Royston said, "For 62 years my mother was one of the Grenadian and regional pioneers of local cuisine, a philosophy that continues to permeate at my resort today." Sir Royston added, "This is the environment in which I was raised and from the age of ten I became involved and entrenched in this wonderful world of hospitality."
Further elaborating, Sir Royston said, "having the power to excel is only half of what it takes - exercising that power is what will make the difference. The power of excellence is environmental, as we are all products of our own habitats and this determines the extent to which we will keep demonstrating that drive for greater achievement." Sir Royston adds, "My emphasis has always been on training, development and promotion - I can tell you that my philosophy is based on service. If guests' expectations are met, we have failed as a resort. People only return to your property or recommend your business when you have exceeded their expectations."
Sir Royston provided attendees with various key exercises to excel: "surround yourself with people who have the drive to work and make necessary sacrifices; recognize the importance of well-defined goals and competitive advantages including uniqueness; and most importantly, excellent service. You cannot excel if the people around you are not excelling."
Sir Royston focused on the topic of uniqueness, describing it as a "lucrative aspect of setting out any business with a competitive advantage." He asked the audience, "What aspect of your products and services are going to be unique that your guests' are not likely to find in many other places at all?" Sir Royston goes on to describe his personal experience with "uniqueness" - "At my own resort, in 1987, I decided that introducing jacuzzis in all of my guest rooms would be a unique selling point. To this day, every room has either double whirlpools or double soaker tubs which are now returning as the order of the day...private pool suites continue to have their own uniqueness."
Profoundly resonating with the audience, Sir Royston received a standing ovation after his closing line, "You have the power to excel, use it," and was quoted throughout the conference in various sessions, on social media outlets and by CHTA's CEO and Director General, Frank Comito, in CHIEF's final general session.

GRENADA (March 3, 2014) - Sir Royston Hopkin KCMG, chairman & managing director of Spice Island Beach Resort (https://www.spiceislandbeachresort.com) announces the appointment of Janelle Hopkin to the position of Deputy Managing Director. Janelle is the daughter of Sir Royston and Lady Hopkin and will ensure the continuation of the history and success of this family owned and operated luxury boutique beachfront resort.
The development of its most valuable asset, its human resources, continues to be an integral part of the focus of Spice Island Beach Resort. In its bid to maintain excellence in customer service the resort recognizes the importance of its team in its drive to perpetually exceed its guests' expectations. In keeping with this perspective, Janelle Hopkin has been appointed to the position of Deputy Managing Director. Janelle will continue to work closely with Sir Royston as the succession plan of the resort begins to unfold.
"As a parent and a businessman, it gives me a sense of pride to see my children develop the capacity to continue my legacy which I have nurtured over the past 30 years," said Sir Royston, adding: "Janelle has demonstrated the willingness, zeal and tenacity that it will take to keep my resort on the cutting edge of hospitality in Grenada, the region and worldwide. Her dedication to the industry both before and after graduating from university is outstanding. She continues to spend long hours daily at the resort ensuring that our guests experience the true Spice hospitality."
After graduating from Westmorland Secondary School in 2001, Janelle began her career in hospitality at Spice Island Beach Resort, where she spent one year training. She then attended Glion Institute of Higher Education in Switzerland to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and Hospitality Management, graduating in 2006 with honors. Her tenure in the United Kingdom and Europe allowed her to acquire extensive experience in food and beverage operations at the Four Seasons and the Royal Garden Hotels, both in London.
Janelle returned home in 2006 to continue her journey, following in her father's footsteps in the hospitality business. She joined the Spice family and over the years worked her way up beginning as Management Trainee, followed by work as Assistant Manager Food & Beverage, Assistant Manager Front Office Operations and recently, Director of Rooms division and Deputy General Manager.
In her new role, Janelle will take a more leading role in the overall administration of the resort as she continues to be guided by General Manager, Brian Hardy who noted that her appointment was the obvious choice. "Success and achievements do not come by accident. Janelle has applied herself and has made her mark as a leader in the Spice family, making it an easy natural progression of her career," he noted.
As she accepted her new challenge at the resort, Janelle thanked all the members of the Spice family who have encouraged her over the years. "I would not ask for your support," she said. "In fact I would ask for your continued support because you have all been so supportive of me and for this I am very grateful," Janelle added. "Even with all the experience I gained overseas, they are the ones who held my hands and helped me navigate my career path," she noted.
Janelle acknowledged General Manager Brian Hardy for his direction over the years and lauded her mother, Lady Hopkin, for being a strong female role model who proved that beauty and business acumen are not mutually exclusive. She also expressed appreciation for her father, Sir Royston's continued vote of confidence, her sister Nerissa and her brother Ryan who have both embraced her in this journey. They too joined the rest of the Spice family in congratulating Janelle and wishing her success in her new position.
